Abstract

1360270 Standby apparatus LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGS GmbH 20 Oct 1971 [22 Oct 1970] 48808/71 Heading H2H Apparatus, particularly for use in a satellite wherein reliability is a decisive requirement comprises a load 9 supplied from a battery 2 by way of two voltage regulators 7, 8 a device 10 being supplied to monitor the voltage applied to the load 9 so as to provide a signal should the voltage exceed a high limit or fall below a low limit which signal is used to operate a relay having contacts 4a, 4b whereby the voltage regulating function is transferred from the regulator 7 to the regulator 8 and vice-versa. A solar battery 1 is provided to charge the battery 2, a device 3 being included to regulate the charging or discharging current of the battery. The monitoring device 10 includes a pair of Schmidt circuits to provide the signals when the voltage is outside a given operating range and the signals are fed by way of an OR gate to a multivibrator device. The output of the multivibrator is fed to one or the other of two relay energizing circuits by way of the changeover contact of a relay, which relay and also the relay comprising the contacts 4a, 4b are of the bi-stable type so that the two relay energizing circuits are operative alternately to change the positions of the contacts 4a, 4b. Thus if the regulator 7 becomes defective, control is assumed by the regulator 8. The relay energizing circuits comprise thyristors and a further circuit comprising transistors is provided whereby an overriding signal from a ground station may be applied to the apparatus. A capacitor may be provided to ensure a "short term" standby supply for the apparatus.
