Abstract

1360241 Flexible seating of adjustable tension; seat frames CHRYSLER UNITED KINGDOM Ltd 24-Feb 1972 [15 March 1971] 6841/71 Headings A4H A4J and A4M A seat comprises a shell 20 having a recess over which a flexible diaphragm 31 is suspended by a frame 9. The shell may be of pressed steel, moulded plastics material with or without glass fibre reinforcement, a plastics moulding having a steel reinforced periphery to which the frame is attached or hard-board. The diaphragm may be of plastics netting. The frame 9 which is located in pockets 32 in the diaphragm is held between a peripheral padded cover member 33 and a flange 27 of a member 22 which boxes in the inner periphery of the shell. One side of the back portion of the flange 27 is provided with two grooves 27a, the frame 9 being initially located in the inner one of the two grooves but being moved to the outer one of the two grooves to take up slack in the diaphragm produced by use of the seat. The tension in the lumbar region of the flexible diaphragm may be adjusted by rotation of a hand wheel 30 which swings a pivoted lever hooked over one side of the frame 9 such that the one side of the frame moves towards or away from the other side. The diaphragm may be covered with upholstery. The upper head rest portion of the shell may be provided with an opening 8 over which a light transmitting material is held.
