Abstract
1359995 Stringed musical instruments COMPLEXUL PENTRU PRELUCRAREA LEMNULUI REGHIN 18 April 1973 43218/70 Heading G5J The front and back of the belly of a stringed musical instrument of generally the same shape as a violin have thin regions D 1 D 2 D 3 D 4 at resonance nodes symmetrically flanking the axis of symmetry. Further thin regions C 1 C 2 and a thickened region C 2 are formed on the axis and the various regions merge smoothly into each other giving the thickness contours shown (marked in millimetres). A bass bar 12 arranged slightly obliquely to the axis and a further bar 13 perpendicular to the axis underneath the bridge have cut out regions 12a, 13a Fig. 4 (not shown) at which they do not touch the soundboard. Five different types of instrument may be formed in this way by varying the width and depth of the belly but keeping the overall length substantially constant. Two groups are tuned like a violin, and the other three are tuned respectively a fifth, an octave and a twelfth below the violin. Instruments may thus be selected for a quartet, quintet or string orchesta all of which are played da braccio using a similar fingering technique.
