Abstract

1359475 Splicing webs JAMES HALLEY & SONS Ltd 10 Dec 1971 [12 Dec 1970] 59182/70 Heading B8R In apparatus for effecting a flying splice between running and standby webs, the web joining device is arranged so that a splice may be formed between webs drawn from reels of which either the inside or outside faces may be selectively presented for processing. As shown in Fig. 2, the web joining device comprises a carriage 20 mounting upper rollers 24 which guide the running web in a path 17 for processing in an "outside" mode. The carriage 20 also supports a driven roller 21 for accelerating a standby reel 14 up to the speed of the running web, a pasting roller 28 carried by arms 27 angularly movable by means of a pneumatic ram 33, and a cutter 30 carried by arms 29 angularly movable by means of a pneumatic ram 31. When the running reel 15 is almost exhausted the rams 31, 33 are actuated to effect the splicing operation. When the inside face of the web, as wound on the reel, has to be presented for processing then the cradle 10 carrying the reels 14, 15 is positioned so that the running reel 15 is located above the standby reel 14 and the running web passes over lower guide rollers 24 on the carriage 20. The roller 28 and cutter 30 are moved to the position required to effect the splice in this "inside" mode of operation by swinging the arms 27 downwardly and the arms 29 upwardly, and a driven roller 22 is provided to accelerate the standby reel 14 (Fig. 3, not shown).
