Abstract

1359398 A gun having a safety mechanism VICTOR COMPTOMETER CORP 28 April 1972 [26 May 1971] 19898/72 Heading F3C A gun comprises a housing 10 having mounted therein a firing means 12 which is movable between cocked and firing positions, cocking means 18 and a trigger 14. A safety member 20 is preferably of a plastics material and passes through a slot 30 in the housing 10 and projects into a guideway 50, 52 between the cocking and triggering means, the safety member 20 being held in its mounted position by frictional forces produced by its own resilience and being movable between positions in which it blocks and allows movement of the trigger 14. In the construction shown (Fig. 3) the safety member includes a finger engaging portion 85 outside the housing and a retaining flange portion 88, the housing being gripped therebetween. The safety member also includes a bar portion which in the unmounted condition of the member projects from the finger engaging portion at an oblique angle to the normal to the finger engaging portion, the arrangement being such that, on mounting the safety member, the bar portion is urged upwardly by the guideway so that the axis thereof is substantially normal to the finger engaging portion, thus providing frictional forces between the guideway and safety member. The safety member is provided with surfaces adjacent the finger engaging portion and the slot 30 is so shaped that the safety member is mounted by introducing it through the slot 30 and then rotating it through 90 degrees. The safety member is automatically moved into its trigger blocking position during cocking of the gun by its engagement with a surface 66 of the cocking means 18. A sear 16 is interposed between the trigger 14 and the firing means 12. In the embodiment disclosed the firing means comprises an air compression piston and its rod, the gun being an air gun.
