Abstract
1359098 Pipe working machine; cutting tubes; grinding tubes G A STUNKARD 20 March 1972 13012/72 Headings B3T B3R B3V and B3D A self-centring pipe working machine comprises a part-circular frame 16, an openable ring assembly 18 rotatable on said frame, clamp means attached to the frame for selfcentring the machine, said clamp means including a pair of clamp members linkably connected through a universal joint, and said clamp means clampable to a pipe section to be worked, tool support means connected to said ring assembly and driving means for rotating said ring assembly on said frame. The ring assembly consists of two parts 20 and 22 hingedly connected as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The clamping means consists of arms 70, 72, 74, 78, 80, 82 and 84. These arms are arranged in pairs on a common axis, each pair being in engagement with an adjacent pair of means of gear teeth. Thus there are two sets of arms on radially opposed positions of the device, the sets being adjustably connected through universal joints 128, 130 and a driving shaft 122. Drive can be manually by a cranking arm 136 or an electric or hydraulic motor. Parts 20, 22 of the ring assembly engage with the frame 16 by a tongue and groove arrangement. A support frame 206 is attached to the main frame 16 and acts to support a driving wheel 190, a transmission assembly 200 and a hand crank 204. An electric or hydraulic motor may be utilized. The outer periphery of parts 20, 22 may be grooved with driving wheel 190 having a surface of resilient material. Alternatively the grooving may be a wheel 190. A further arrangement is to have a chain fitted to the outer periphery of parts 20, 22, wheel 190 taking the form of a cog. Support frame 208 affixed to the ring assembly has a tool post 214 to which a suitable tool may be fitted for, e.g. cutting, bevelling, welding, grinding, drilling, polishing or X-raying.
