Abstract
1359085 Cleaning exterior surfaces of tubes COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE 4 April 1972 [2 April 1971] 15539/72 Heading F2N [Also in Division G6] A scraper for removing metal deposit from a cylindrical bar movable in a bath of molten metal is of hollow cylindrical form and slidably receives the bar, that part of the scraper nearer the bath being of frusto-conical form terminating in a knife-edged lip which lies against the surface of the bar, the scraper further having slots disposed parallel to its cylindrical axis and extending over the greater part of its length. In the embodiment described, the hollow tube 10 of a manipulator arm for fuel elements in a sodium-cooled nuclear reactor is provided with a scraper 19 for removing the deposit of sodium which forms on the tube 10. The scraper 19 comprises a sleeve 23 formed with a shoulder 20, a frusto-conical lower portion 24 terminating in a lip 25, and a number of longitudinal slots 26 extending over the greater part of the length of the scraper 19 between apertures 27 and the lip 25. Those portions of the scraper 19 between the slots 26 constitute the blades 22 of the scraper and are held against the tube 10 by means of a shoulder 21 on a nut 18 screwed to the lower end of a support piece 6. The support piece 6 is supported in an opening 2 in the reactor vessel 1 between an envelope tube 3 and an inner sleeve 7. The sleeve 7 supports a sealing device comprising a spacer bush 12, four steel sealing segments 13 and gauged spacers 32, the assembly being tightened by a threaded ring 14. A heating collar 28 enables the temperature of the scraper to be regulated, while a shaft guide 29 serves to centre the tube 10. The scraper 19 should be made of a wearresistant material, e.g. steel. In a modification the tightening ring instead of being formed by the shoulder 21 of the nut 18 is provided by an independent ring engaged around the scraper 19.
