Abstract
1359026 Clutch control; master cylinders AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 6 Oct 1972 [25 Nov 1971] 54713/71 Headings F2L and F2F In a control system for a clutch, in which a clutch pedal 27 operates through a lever 26 and rod 24 on a piston 15 in a master cylinder 10, to supply liquid to a slave cylinder 11 of similar design to the master cylinder 10 to disengage the clutch the cylinders 10, 11 and the conduit 19 interconnecting them are of a material such that the variation in volume of the system with change of temperature is substantially the same as the variation in volume with temperature of the contained liquid. The material is a plastics material and with a water based liquid in use, glass filled nylon may be used for the cylinder members 12, nylon for the conduit 19, and nylon, acetal resin, polyethylene or polypropylene for the pistons 15, 16 and rolling diaphragms 17, which are provided to seal pistons and cylinders. A spring 43 may be provided to permanently bias the release bearing 31 against the release member of the clutch (a diaphragm spring in the illustrated case) although a further, stronger, spring on lever 29 may prevent this abutment in the clutch engaged condition. An adjustable rod 28 is provided for manual adjustment for wear of the clutch plates, although an alternative arrangement can have a further variable volume cylinder in the circuit between master and slave cylinders for adjustment of the length of the fluid column to effect the same adjustment. The master and slave cylinders are each mounted on parts of the vehicle body 37, 38 by a bayonet connection.
