Abstract

1359019 Sedimentation tanks SHERRITT GORDON MINES Ltd 16 Sept 1971 [30 Sept 1970] 43325/71 Heading B1D [Also in Division G3] A settling apparatus comprises a tank 12 with inlet 42 via feed well 43, clarified liquid outlet 29 and sludge outlet 14, the tank having a conical interior bottom 28 and containing a rotary rake assembly 32. The rake assembly is mounted on a shaft 36 in bearings 35 so that it may both be rotated by fluid operated motor 50, and also may be raised or lowered vertically, by piston 63. The motor and piston are connected in a fluid circuit such that if the load on the rake assembly and hence the motor increases then the rake will be lifted vertically to lower the load thereon. Hence the vertical position of the rake is responsive to the load thereon. If the load on the rake increases then the motor 50 will slow and the pressure in the fluid supply line for the motor 52 will consequently increase. This will result in an increase of pressure at 66 below the piston and will hence raise the piston this having the effect of reducing the load on the rake and hence the pressure in the fluid supply line. A pressurised air source 68 is connected to the space 65 about the piston to act as a buffer and to force the piston and rake down if the pressure in the fluid supply line falls. The outgoing fluid from motor 50 is passed through a further hydraulic motor 60 which is coupled to diaphradgm pump 20 controlling the sludge outlet rate from the tank.
