Abstract

1358902 Thickened aqueous polymer compositions LUBRIZOL CORP 13 Oct 1971 [27 Oct 1970 (2)] 47718/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division C5] Aqueous compositions having modified viscosity properties, suitable for use as fire-resistant hydraulic fluids, and the like, comprise water and as a viscosity modifying agent, a watersoluble polymer of a monomer of the formula wherein R<SP>1</SP> is H, C 1 -C 7 alkyl or substituted C 1 -C 7 alkyl radical, R<SP>2</SP> is a hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical, each of R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>5</SP> is H or a hydrocarbon or substituted hydrocarbon radical, and M is H or one equivalent of a cation. (The term " water-soluble " is used to denote that the polymer forms with water a homogeneous system.) The polymer may be a homopolymer or a copolymer with, for example, (meth)acrylic acid or a salt thereof, an amide such as acrylamide, methacrylamide, N- methylacrylamide and diacetone acrylamide, or maleic anhydride or fumaric acid. The compositions additionally include either (a) a water-miscible diol or ether thereof or (b) a mineral oil and an emulsifier or dispersing agent. Examples of (a) are ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, diethylene glycol, ethylene glycol monomethyl or monobutyl ether, and diethylene glycol monomethyl ether. A preferred emulsifier for (b) is a mixed alkali metal/amine salt of a mixture of a fatty acid (e.g. tall oil acid) and an aliphatic α,#-dicarboxylic acid having at least 50 carbon atoms (e.g. polyisobutenyl succinic acid). The compositions may also contain additives such as rust inhibitors and extreme pressure agents (e.g. a zinc salt of an alkyl phosphoro dithioic acid). Examples 1-3 illustrate preparations of sodium 2 - acrylamido - 2 - methylpropanesulphonate homopolymer. The monomer is polymerized in an aqueous/organic medium using a redox catalyst system and emulsifier; the polymer product is obtained in granular form.
