Abstract

1358167 Measuring intrinsic safety R J REDDING 29 Oct 1971 [3 Nov 1970] 52110/70 Heading G1U The intrinsic safety of a circuit 1, i.e., its inductance since this determines the size of the spark produced when current in the circuit is interrupted, is measured by first establishing a known current from a battery 4 through the circuit via a contact 7, and then opening the contact 7 and integrating, on a capacitor 8, the energy emitted by the circuit. The resulting potential on the capacitor 8 is then a measure of the inductance of the circuit 1 under test. A switch 11 may be closed to discharge the capacitor prior to a test. Different sizes of capacitor 8 may be selected by a switch 14, and a reference inductance 12 may be included in the circuit.
