Abstract

1358144 Mineral-mining picks G W ELDERS 21 Feb 1972 7865/72 Heading E1F In a mineral-mining cutter pick and box assembly the pick shank-receiving bore 11 in the box 10 or the pick shank 16 depart from strict cylindricality in order to provide a passage 40 therebetween for the passage of fine cuttings rearwards through the bore whilst not impeding rotation of the shank in the bore during use of the assembly, the cuttings falling from the bore into a space defined by a body portion 30 that mounts and protects locking means 35 precluding unintentional withdrawal of the pick from the box. Two preferred embodiments are described. In the embodiment not shown turning of the pick in the box is aided by spaced protuberances on the head of the pick, the departure from strict cylindricality of the shank is due to spaced protuberances on the shank and cuttings-receiving space is created by an enlargement of the rear portion of the shank-receiving bore.
