1357969 Plant propagating container N P DI CAMPAGNA 21 Oct 1971 [24 April 1971] 49001/71 Heading A1E A plant propagating container is formed from two superimposed layers of organic material an outer self-destructive fibrous layer and an inner reinforcing layer of wood pulp, both of which allow the passage of roots through to the surrounding soil. The outer layer is formed from any suitable fibrewoven on a loom or knitting machine to present an elastic structure having interspaces and the material is chosen so as to decay in the soil in a chosen period; short cotton fibres are preferred but a life of about three years can. be obtained by the use of cable hemp. The inner layer is formed in a series of sub-layers-in the vertical section shown two sub-layers 3, 4 of wood pulp reinforce a thin outer layer 2 of cotton fibres; layer 3 extending overall the inside with layer 4 reinforcing the top and bottom edges. The container is provided with circular apertures 5 in its lateral walls and may have its lateral walls hinged together to allow it to be folded flat for storage; the base in this case being formed solely from the outer layer in the form of a thin walled sack. Organic or inorganic additives may be incorporated in one or both layers-including fertilisers in quantities sufficient to ensure a residual amount in the soil after transplanting.
