Abstract
1357898 Steering gear A W BARKER 5 Aug 1971 [13 Aug 1970] 39033/70 Heading B7V [Also in Division F1] A device for transmitting the position of a control member, such as a steering wheel in a light watercraft, to an actuated member, such as the craft's rudder, comprises a transmitter unit, Fig. 3, having a piston 4 over which a cylinder 1 can reciprocate in response to movement of a steering wheel, the transmitter unit being in telemotor communication with a receiver unit, Fig. 10, in which a piston 39 reciprocates in response to movements of the transmitter cylinder 1 thus to move a rudder. The transmitter unit comprises a piston-rod 5 held in an end body 7, the cylinder 1 being supported for reciprocation with a housing 8 integral with the body 7. A steering wheel is connected to a shaft 12 having gear teeth 11 which engage teeth 10 on a guide rib 9 of the cylinder 1, the rib 9 extending through a slot in the housing 8. Hence steering wheel movement effects reciprocation of cylinder 1. The piston-rod 5 has located therein a sleeve 21 also secured to the body 7. The rod 5 thus encloses two passages, the axial passage 22 within sleeve 21 and an annular passage 23 between the sleeve and the rod 5. The passage 22 communicates with the chamber 2 at the left-hand side of piston 4 (Fig. 3) and with a passage 26 in body 7 which leads to an inlet/outlet port 27. The annular passage 23 has orifices 44 communicating with chamber 3 and the other end communicates with a port 32 in body 7. Ports 27, 32 communicate with ports 42 and 43 respectively of a conventional piston and cylinder 39, 35, Fig. 10. Thus it can be seen that movement of cylinder 1 by a steering wheel to the left say, Fig. 3, decreases the volume of chamber 3 and increases the volume of chamber 2. The receiver unit 39, 35 correspondingly moves to the right, Fig. 30, to increase the volume of chamber 41 and decrease that of chamber 40. The piston-rod 38 transmits such movement to a rudder. Various control devices for the system are also described (Figs. 4 to 9, not shown).
