Abstract
1357308 Calibrating wheel-rims GIANETTI SpA 24 Oct 1972 [30 Oct 1971] 48997/72 Heading B3A A method of calibrating partly-finished wheel rims 1 comprises placing the partly-finished rim on to a calibrating machine and applying radially outwardly directed and radially inwardly directed forces to the rim successively. In operation a partly-finished rim 1 is placed on a disc 2 at the upper limit of stroke of a ram (3), Figs. 5-8, 10 (not shown). Ram (3) is then lowered to introduce the partly-finished wheel rim into the inner cavity of outer die D. Ram portions 6, 9 then descend until slidable sectors 8 of inner die E enter the rim, and annular member 10 has partially thrust slidable sectors 5 of the outer die D inwardly. Ram portion 9 remains stationary while ram portion 6 continues to descend. Sectors 8 expand radially outwardly, due to a frusto-conical member 7, and cause dilation of the rim. Straightening out of radial flange 1a is performed by compressing the flange between the flat surfaces of sectors 5, 8, Fig. 9 (not shown). The ram portion 6 is then partially raised so that sectors 8 carried by movable members 8a move radially inwardly under the action of biasing means (not shown) to become separated from the inner surface of the rim. Ram portion 9 is then lowered so that inclined planes 14, 15 engage to urge sectors 5 radially inwardly and complete the calibration operation, whence the rim can be unloaded either manually or automatically (as for the loading), by raising ram portions 6, 9 simultaneously with the disc 2.
