Abstract
135,723. Colle, A. Feb. 25, 1919. Rollers, supported on.--The vessel is supported by floats which are carried by an endless band, but which are independent of the means for propelling the vessel. The float support 3, Fig. 1, extends under the lower deck 1 and over the upper deck 2, and encloses the power plant 4 and fuel tank 8. In the example shown, the vessel is propelled hy air propellers 6 driven by shafts 5 and mounted on the top deck 7, but any other propelling-means may be adopted. The floats 9 carry transverse pivots provided with rollers which cooperate with an endless track 12 which acts as a guide. In a modification, Fig. 4, each of the floats is replaced by a series of smaller floats 13 arranged to move transversely with respect to the length of the ship upon guideways 14. The whole structure is mounted on a rod carrying rollers 11 which engage with the main longitudinal guideway 12. The float units are freely moved by the motion of the water relatively to the ship, the object being to diminish the skin friction of the ship. The resistance to a turning movement of the ship is similarly diminished by the auxiliary transverse floats 13.
