Abstract

An airship for handling heavy loads, as in the heavy main patent is modified regarding the support and positioning of the propulsion units to improve aerostatic and aerodynamic characterics, thrust vectoring and engine maintenance. Further advantages are that the engine supports can form floats for maritime use and can also be used to control stability and attitude of the machine. Long parallel beams (108,111) can be attached to the feet of the gantry structure and carry at each end the propulsion units (123) so that the latter are mounted low down to assist pendulum stability. The beams can be made watertight and compartmented so that they float or may be part submerged in water. Retractable landing gear (115, 116) may be fitted for overland use. Additional flexible envelopes (140, 141) can be attached to pairs of the support balloons (135, 138 etc.) forming fore and aft side skirts. These envelopes fair the structure and reduce drag.
