Abstract

1356996 Removing chlorine from gases BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 3 Sept 1971 [4 Sept 1970] 41188/71 Heading C1A [Also in Division C5] In removing gaseous chlorine compounds from a gas stream selected from gaseous or vaporized hydrocarbons and synthesis gas all containing one or more chlorine compounds and water vapour, the chlorine content is reduced to less than 1 ppm. by passing the gas at an elevated temperature over a stationary solid absorbent which contains an alkaline earth metal oxide, hydroxide or carbonate, or a compound decomposable into such, or a mixture of such an oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or compound with an alkali metal oxide, hydroxide, carbonate or compound capable of being decomposed into same. The alkaline earth metal may be Mg, Ca or Ba, and the alkali metal may be Na or K. The temperature used may be 100-500‹ C. and the absorbent mixture may contain alkaline earth metal compound and alkali metal compound in a weight ratio of from 85 : 15 to 60 : 40 based on the metals. Preferably the absorbent is applied to a carrier such that at least 30% by weight of the carrier plus the absorbent is active absorbent. The process may be carried out at a pressure of from 0 to 50 atm. gauge with a feed rate of 10 to 20,000 litres of gas/litre of absorbent according to the pressure.
