In a process for the production of styrene by catalytic thermal dehydrogenation of an ethylbenzene feedstock containing combined chlorine using a catalyst containing combined alkali metal, the improvement comprises dechlorinating the feed stock prior to dehydrogenation under conditions such that no substantial dehydrogenation of ethylbenzene occurs. The dechlorination may be effected by passing the ethylbenzene feedstock over a solid composition containing a compound of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, and optionally an inert solid, at 400-600‹ C. The feedstock is preferably first mixed with an inert gas such as H 2 , C0 2 , N 2 or steam. Preferred compounds for the dechlorination are carbonates.
