Abstract
1356994 Apparatus for supplying melt to moulds GRAVICAST PATENT VERWERTUNGS GmbH 27 Aug 1971 [28 Aug 1970 4 Sept 1970] 40378/71 Heading B3F [Also in Divisions B5 and F4] Apparatus for supplying molten material, e.g. metal or plastics, to a mould 22 or 117 comprises first and second containers for the melt, the second container 13 and 106 being located within the first container so that melt within the first container surrounds the second container and can flow thereinto under the pressure of the head of melt. The flow of melt into the second container may be controlled by a stopper rod 114 or a sliding plate 47. After the mould has been filled, an additional pressure may be applied to the melt in the second container 106 and the mould by a piston 111 moving in a passage in the wall of the container 106. The first container may be formed by two parts 1 and 5 which are detachably connected by bolts passing through flanges and have mats or stripes 31 of kaolin wool therebetween. It is heated by induction heating means located at the ends of passageways 33 and 108 and may be provided with discharge openings (35) and (37) provided in the lower part 1 and upper part 5 respectively. These openings are normally closed. The nozzle 21 leading to the mould 22 may be vertical as shown or it may be horizontal, Fig. 8 (not shown). The latter is particularly suitable for feeding melt to a continuous casting mould. The nozzle may be made of graphite, magnesite or a sintered oxide and is readily replaceable, it being held in position by a press plate (59) bearing on the nozzle through an intermediate layer of refractory material (60), Fig. 10 (not shown). The said first container may form part of the melting furnace or it may be supplied from a ladle (44), Fig. 4 (not shown).
