Abstract

1356920 Viscosity meter BP CHEMICALS Ltd 2 Feb 1972 [31 Dec 1970] 62090/70 Heading G4H [Also in Division G1] In apparatus for measuring the viscosity of a fluid in a test tube 1 (Fig. 1), a sphere is dropped into the tube and the time taken for it to travel a predetermined distance at its terminal velocity is measured digitally. The test tube is situated in a water bath 2 to maintain the apparatus at a constant temperature. As described two parallel light beams are derived from a source 3 by light fibres 4, 5, lens 8, 9, and slits 10, 11, light detectors 14, 13 at right angles to the beam receiving reflected light as the sphere intersects the beam. Pulses from a generator are counted in a binary coded decimal counter for the time interval between the output from the upper detector and the output from a lower detector, the count being decoded and printed under the control of circuitry receiving the light detector outputs. The control circuitry also operates the release mechanism of a ball dropper.
