Abstract
1356774 Coated transparent bodies SAINTGOBAIN INDUSTRIES 17 Aug 1972 [19 Aug 1971] 38454/72 Heading C7F A transparent element comprises a transparent support having coated on a surface a layer of Al thick enough to reduce the visible light transmission coefficient by 5-30%, and a layer of gold on the Al layer. Typically, glass is vapour-coated with Al to reduce transmission by 25%, and coated with Au to reduce it by a further 30%, or else glass is vapour-coated with Al to reduce transmission by 10%, coated with gold to reduce it a further 30% and coated with further Al to reduce it a further 25%; this is achieved in a single evacuated chamber containing an Al and an Au source by the use of masks. The resulting bodies are used as windows where transmission of visible light and reflection of I.R. radiation is required; the metal layer is sufficiently conductive to be used as an electric heating element.
