Abstract

1356767 Severing by tearing UARCO Inc 26 April 1972 19290/72 Heading B4B [Also in Division B8] A bursting apparatus for bursting a stationery web 20 having transverse lines of weakness 22 into sheets comprises a frame mounting a pair 30 of input rollers for feeding the web to a pair 34 of output rollers also mounted in the frame at least one roller of each pair being driven by a motor mounted in the frame, an input roller 132 being driven, by the motor, peripherally slower than an output roller 92 but being capable of faster rotation, by contact with the web, for a limited period when the web is initially gripped between both input and output rollers, by virtue of a lost motion drive connection to the motor, the subsequent reduction in peripheral speed of the input roller, when the lost motion has been taken up, bursting the web. Each roller may have circumferential channels (134), (152) Fig. 9 (not shown) which accommodate longitudinal web guides (36), (38). The drive from the motor is transferred via belts to the output roller 92, the shaft 90 of which is provided with a gearwheel having a toothed periphery 112a which transfers the drive via gear-wheel 118, to the wheel 162 having adjustably positioned pegs 168, 180 which transmit the drive via pin 170 to the shaft of the input roller. The pegs and pin provide the lost motion connection and can be adjusted to produce a surge in tension in the web to burst a line of weakness as it passes over a deflecting roller assembly 32 adjustably mounted on an eccentric.
