Abstract
1356507 Rolling; making composite sheets NIPPON KOKAN KK 2 June 1972 [16 June 1971] 25772/72 Headings B3A and B3M [Also in Divisions B5 and B2] In a method of coating a steel sheet 1 with a layer of protective metal (e.g. aluminium), the sheet is coated with metal powder 2, and the powder is bonded to the sheet by the rolls 3 of a rolling mill, a small quantity of atomized oil being electrostatically applied to the rolls to prevent the powder from adhering to the roll surfaces. Equalizing rollers 4, which may be of felt, non-woven synthetic-fibre fabric, or rubber, evens out the layer of oil applied to the rolls. The oil, which may be cottonseed oil, dioctyl sebacate, or an aqueous emulsion of oil, is applied at the rate of between 5 and 50 mg/m<SP>2</SP>. The oil is atomized in a tank 8 (Fig. 2) by a supply of air 10, the concentration of the spray being adjusted by a second air supply 12. An electrode 15 or 15<SP>1</SP> ionizes the spray, and a double walled nozzle 13 electrostatically applies it to the roll 3. A modified nozzle having concentric tubes (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) may be used. The oil may alternatively be atomized in the electrostatic field which applies it to the roll.
