Abstract

1356313 Ruminant feed PURDUE RESEARCH FOUNDATION 12 Ndv 1971 [16 Nov 1970] 52561/71 Headings AIM and A2B In the feeding of ruminants with NPN compounds, the toxic effect of high ammonium ion content of the ruminal fluid are mitigated by introducing into the rumen prior to the decomposition of the NPN compound therein a cation exchange material whereby ammonium ions are partially exchanged thereon and thereafter gradually released by the action of saliva entering the rumen. The cation exchange material may be in the form of porous beads or pellets, or it may be introduced as a bolus, preferably into the ventral sac of the rumen when it has a s.g. higher than the ruminal fluids, or it may be included in finely divided form in the feed ration. Suitable materials in-- clude organic sulphonic acid resins, crystalline alumino silicates such as chabazite, dinoptilite, and various zeolites. The NPN compound may be an ammonium salt, urea, or biuret.
