Abstract

1356291 Elastomers BRIDGESTONE TIRE CO Ltd 13 May 1971 [15 May 1970] 14826/71 Headings C3B and C3P Elastomeric polymers are prepared by mixing (I) at least one trimellitoyl group containing polymer of formula in which R is a residue, after removal of OH groups, of a hydroxyl function polymer, M.W. > 700 and containing 2-100% by wt. of olefinically unsaturated double bond units, n is at least 2, with (II) a compound containing at least two epoxy groups, and subjecting the mixture to heating. I may be prepared by ozonizing a diene polymer, especially a homo- or co-polymer of butadiene, reducing the resultant ozonide and then reacting the hydroxyl group containing polymer with either trimellitic anhydride and halides or esters thereof. Reduction may take place in the presence of LiH, AlH 3 , LiAlH 4 or sodium borohydride. Reaction with trimellitic anhydride is preferably carried out in the presence of a tertiary amine, e.g. pyridine, as acid acceptor. In examples II are diglycidyl ethers of bisphenol A and a diglycidyl ether of an aliphatic glycol.
