Abstract

1356099 Bonded fibre laminates E F NEVILLE 19 April 1971 [20 Nov 1969 27 Nov 1969] 56779/69 and 58056/69 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions D1 and B2] A laminate comprises a continuous layer of synthetic polymer fibres of less than # inch length, preferably 1/16 to “ inch, held in a coherent mass of intermingled fibres by a bonding medium and attached solely by adhesive means to a non-metallic backing other than fibres bonded together, the bonding medium extending throughout the thickness of the layer. The fibres may be waste nylon, rayon or acrylonitrile plus some wool or cotton. The binder is a natural, acrylic or other synthetic latex and may be vulcanized. The backing may be a foamed sheet, a woven or knitted fabric or a paper sheet. The laminate may be embossed. Preferably the laminate is produced by the apparatus claimed in Specification 1,356,100. In the embodiment of Fig. 1 the fibres are conveyed by duct 13, passed through a vibrating sieve 15 and collected upon a backing carried on conveyer belt 10. Resin is sprayed by guns 14 arrayed or reciprocated transversely across the conveyer and the fabric calendered between rolls 16, 17. Heaters may be stationed between the calender 16, 17 and take up roll 20. A coating of foam latex may be applied to the resin-fibre layer or to the backing and excess foam removed by a doctor blade. In the embodiment of Fig. 5 the fibres are air laid from hopper 40 through vibrating sieve 41 on to a backing placed on moving platform 33. Resin is applied by reciprocating spray 44. The laminate may be embossed by plate 51.
