Abstract
135,594. Goold, L. W., (American Laundry Machinery Co.). Nov. 27, 1918. Ironing-machines with pressing action only.-Comprises a construction of small press for pressing clothing and laundered articles, of the type in which relatively - movable pressing members are ' closed by lever mechanism prior to fluid-pressure being applied to effect a final heavy pressure on the articles. Particular features in the present construction comprise the arranging of the pistonof the fluid-pressure cylinder in line with, and connected directly to, the shaft carrying the movable pressing member, and the special operating means whereby both the closing movement of the press and the power pressure are effected by one movement of a single treadle. The initial movement of the main operating-treadle 10 closes the press members through lever linkages and at the same time compresses springs so that the valves of the fluid-pressure apparatus are operated during the latter part of its movement. When the treadle 10 is depressed against the resistance of the spring 11, the toggle 20, 21 is straightened to raise the sleeve 24 fixed on the rod 5. This movement raises the movable pressing head 4 into contact with the fixed head 3. The treadle is also connected to a rod 60 which carries a sleeve 59 acted on by opposed springs. The sleeve 59 is connected to the valve rods 54, 55. The valve rod 54 operates a valve which controls the passage between the pressure main and the cylinder 6, while the valve rod 55 operates the valve 53 controlling the passage between the cylinder and the exhaust pipe. Prior to the depression of the treadle the valve rod 54 is held down by the pressure fluid in the main, while the valve 53 is open to exhaust. Depression of the treadle therefore first rocks the lever 57 about the rod 54 until the valve 53 closes, and then compresses the lower spring 63 until the pressure is sufficient to raise the valve rod 54 by rooking the lever about the valve rod 55. Pressure fluid then enters the cylinder and raises the piston and the rod 5. The slot 22 in the toggle permits the rod to rise without disturbing the treadle mechanism. When released, the treadle is restored by the spring 11 and first closes the valve on the rod 54 and then opens the exhaust valve 53. The weight of the movable pressing head then restores the parts to their normal positions. The main treadle 10 is locked in the depressed position by a projection 26 engaging under an inclined lug 27 on a release treadle 28.
