- This invention relates to pressing machines,
as garment andlaundrypressing machines, and particularly to actuating means therefor, which actuating means includes a toggle, a booster arranged to come into action when the press is closed under little or minimum pressure in order to deliver final heavy pressure regardless of such conditions as the thickness of thework or the and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed. s

The-pressing machine here illustrated is of the machine emconventional type in which the cooperating press ing elements or jaws are a stationary buck 1 and a head 2 movable toward and from thebuck. The means for actuating the head comprises a toggle and means for successively straightening the toggle and boosting the toggle to close the press under heavy pressure, and 'workingin the reverse order when 'thepress is opening.
' In the illustrated embodiment of my invention, the toggle and booster means are operated by power.
8 and 9 designate respectively the links of the toggle, these being pivoted together at 10, and pivoted at 11 and 12 to the base of the frame and to the rear arm of the lever 5 respectively. One of the links of the toggle as the lower link 9 consists of two'sections, as a rod 13 and a head 14 slidably mounted on' the rod, the head 14 being connected by the pivot 10 to the lower end of the'link 8. The head is bifurcated and the opposite arms thereof have bearings on the pivot 10.

This spring 17 is located within the sleeve or hub portion-15 of the head 14-and encircles the rod- 13 between ahead or shoulder 18on the upper end of the rod and-a seator shoulder'19 withinthe sleeve portion 15-.
Thus, during the movementof the toggle, from folded position,- the head 14 cannot slide downwardly' on the rod 13 owing to theshoulder'or collar 16 but the'head is capable'of upward sliding'm'ovement against the action of the spring 17 when the boostingforce is applied tothe lowerv endof the link 8. The toggle is moved from folded to or toward a straightened position in any'suitable manner, here shownas by a cylinder '20 having a piston therein, the rod 21 of which is pivoted at 22 to an'angularly forwardly extending-arm 23 at the 'upperend of the link 8, this 'ofiset; arm being provided on -a '-hubor tiltblock 24"at the upper endof the' link 8' which blockjhas bearings-mounted on the pivot 12. t The motion of the treadle is transmitted through a compression spring 33. Depression of the treadle 28 permits air to flow -from the pipe 26" through the'casing 25 and pipe 2'7to the cylinder 20to actuate the piston therein, and hence, move the toggle from folded to any one of a number of nearly straightened positions and close the press under little pressure. The piston rod 21 constitutes a reciprocating actuator for the lever 5Jand toggle. H V

The pistons in each of the cylinders are single acting and the press is opened when the pressure in the cylinders is releasedby. countersprings 47' connected to the rear arm of the lever 5andto thelower part of the pressing machine frame 4.
In operation. he pr s fi t closed b pressing the pedal 28 and when the toggle straightens, the push button 42-may be depressed causing the booster lever 34 to be actuated boosting the toggle link' 8 and head 14 upwardly against the action of the spring 17. When the push button 42 is operated the treadle 28 may be released. Upon operation of the trip lever 44 which releases the booster lever 3&1, the-toggle will fold and the press open-under the influence of the countersprings 47. Owing to thespring 1.7,: this folding operation is noiseless and without shock, as the spring'prevents a violent taking-{up of the lost motion between the links 8 and 9 or between the head 14 and the rod 13;

1. In'a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, means for actuating the movable element including a toggle having a first and second link,,the first link of the toggle including two sections one of which has a bifurcated end pivotally connected with the second link of the toggle and a sleeve slidable endwise on the other section of said first link, operating connections between the second link and the movable pressing element to actuate the latter, an abutment on the first link, a spring located in the sleeve and thrusting the latter against said abutment, and means for successively straightening the toggle and moving the second link endwise, a
part of the last mentioned means extending between the bifurcated end and coacting with the adjacent end of the second link.
3. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movabletoward and from the other, means for actuating the movable element including a toggle having a first and second link, the first link of the toggle including two sections one of which has a bifurcated end pivoted to the second link of the toggle and a sleeve slidable endwise on-the other section of said first link, connections between the isecond link and the movable pressing element to I actuate the latter, an abutment on the first link,
a spring located in the sleeve and thrusting the sleeve portion of the head against said abutment, and means for successively actuating the toggle :toward straightened position and moving the second link endwise, a part of the last mentioned means extending between the bifurcations of the head and coacting with the adjacent end of the second link and having frictionally coacting ..wedge faces.
4. In a pressing machine, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, means for actuating the movable pivoted to the second link of the toggle and a sleeve slidable' endwise on the other section of said first link. operating connections between the f second link and the movable pressing element to actuate the latter, an abutment on the first link,
a spring located in the sleeve and thrusting the latter against said abutment, and means for successively actuating the toggle toward straightened position and moving the second link endwise, a part of the last mentioned means extending between the bifurcated end and coacting with the adjacent end of the link, said part having frictionally coacting wedge faces of V-shaped for- "mation.

In a pressing machine, afram'e, cooperating" pressing elements one of which is movable toward and from the other, a lever carrying the movable element, toggle links pivoted together and respectively to the frame and to said lever, the link pivcited to the leverhaving an angularly extending arm near the end thereof adjacent the lever, and a reciprocating actuator connected to said arm.
7. In a pressing machine, a frame, cooperating pressing elements, one of which is movable toward and from the other, a lever carrying the movable element, toggle links pivoted together and respectively to the frame and to said lever, the link pivoted to the lever having an angularly extending arm near its end adjacent the lever, a reciprocating actuator connected to said arm, the link connected to said lever being shiftable endwise relatively to the other link, and booster means for effecting the endwise movement of the link connected to said lever.
8. A garment or ironing press comprising. a frame and coacting press jaws, a lever fulcrumed in the frame and carrying one jaw to actuate it in relation to the other jaw, a link pivotally connected to the lever and having an offset arm disposed toward the fulcrum, link means operatively mounted in the frame and connected with the link to guide its movement, and motor means pivotally connected with the offset arm.
9. A garment or'ironing press comprising a frame supporting a press jaw, a press lever fulcrumed in the frame and carrying another press jaw, atoggle pivoted at one end-on the frame, a
pivot directly connecting the other end of the toggle to the lever, a second pivot carried by the toggle at its end connected with the lever, said second pivot being disposed proximate the first pivot and between said first pivot and the fulcrum. and means operatively connected with the second pivot to thrust it upwardly to impart astraightening action to the toggle and a swinging motion to the press lever.
10. A pressing machine comprising coacting press jaws, a frame, a lever fulcrumed on the frame and attached to one jaw, a toggle including an upper link secured to a hub which is pivotally connected with the lever and a lower link pivoted on the frame, said links being operatively connected at their adjacent ends to provide a toggle knee which swings relatively to the frame to fold and straighten the toggle, an arm formed on the hub and extending at an angle to the upper link and towards the fulcrum of the lever, and operating means connected with the arm on a pivot disposed proximate the hub pivot in the lever, whereby the force of the operating means acts initially to tilt the hub and thereby actuating the knee toward straightened position and actuates the lever to close the press.
11.
