Abstract
1355897 Pipe couplings; joint-making packing W SCHWARZ 23 Oct 1972 [24 April 1972 18 Sept 1972] 48728/72 Headings F2G and F2B An electrically insulating junction member consists of an insulating sleeve 1 or T-piece (Figs. 11 and 12, not shown) held between metallic pipe couplings, the couplings being integral with or subsequently welded or screwed into a pipe-line. The rim of sleeve 1 is sealed against the base of a socket 4 and the sleeve has a thickened annular bead 27. Axial pressure may be exerted on the bead 27 through an undivided, non-detachable ring 12 (Fig. 3) a radially split ring (25 in Figs. 4, 7 and 21, 22 in Fig. 17 and 52 in Fig. 23, none of the figures being shown), a ring of wedges 5 (Fig. 1) or a pair of wedges (12, Figs. 18 and 19, not shown). A sealing groove 4<SP>1</SP> may contain a silicone rubber tube 3, filled with glycerine, alternatively, it may contain a barrier liquid. After tightening, the union nut 6 is locked by means of a ring nut 10 and a protective coating 34 of foam ethylene/ vinyl acetate co-polymer mixed with bitumen or foamed polyurethane (Fig. 13, not shown) applied. In one form, Fig. 3, in which the ends of the sleeve 1 are oblique to its axis, steel rims 33 are shrunk on sleeve 1. In Figs. 6 and 8 (not shown) the union nut (6) is applied hot and becomes locked on the screwthread, on cooling. In Fig. 15, the abutting faces of a slightly tapered spigot and socket 4 are coated with epoxy resin and held under axial compression by tools 49, 50, while a weld seam 37 is applied. In Figs. 18 and 19 (not shown) divided channelsection clamping rings (41) are provided. In Fig. 24 (not shown) annular bead (27) is vulcanized into a seal (3) of silicone rubber. The sleeve 1 may be formed from reinforced synthetic resin formed by winding on a mandrel on a metal support (53, Fig. 26, not shown). The annular bead 27 may be formed around a metal ring (53, Fig. 22, not shown). The sleeve 1 may have an inert lining 2, which may be P.T.F.E. (Fig. 3). The resin from which the ring is made may be a thermosetting cycloaliphatic epoxy reinforced with pyrolized polyacrylonitrile fibres, glass fibres or glass fibres coated with boron. Alternatively, the sleeve 1 may be moulded from a casting resin reinforced with crystalline fibres of silicon carbide or silicon nitride.
