Abstract

1355523 Folding ladders WALTHAMS (BOGNOR REGIS) Ltd 24 Jan 1972 [3 Feb 1971] 3823/71 Heading E1S The sides of a folding ladder are formed of links 10, each of which has a slot 12 near each end for retaining an end of a rung 20, and the rungs have a peripheral groove near each end for engaging the slots 12 in the ends of two overlapped links 10, each slot 12 being formed as two intersecting circular openings 13, 14 of different diameter, so that the end of a rung may be inserted through the larger opening 13 and the grooved portion snapped into the smaller opening 14 to retain the rung. The links and rungs are preferably made of plastics material. A lug may project from the groove in the rung to engage the slot 12 and prevent the rung from rotating relative to one of the links, and a tread surface may then be provided on the rung. An additional slot 16 at the centre of the link 10 may retain a connector for fastening two ladders side-by-side. A spacer 30 may be attached to the ladder to abut an object being scaled, e.g. a mast, and has a pair of arms 31 bifurcated at their ends to embrace a rung 20, the bifurcations having lugs 36 to engage slots 12 in the links 10, or lugs to engage behind the links.
