Abstract
1355429 Percussive drills H CLEGG K C DWYER and J P SPARLING 30 June 1972 [13 July 1971] 32740/71 Heading B4C Percussive drilling apparatus for forming blind holes, e.g. for catseyes in roads, employs a cutting head having peripheral cutting edges enclosing an area having a shape similar to that of the desired hole cross-section but smaller in at least one direction, and central cutting edges within the area, the head being mounted for movement in at least that direction within the limits in that direction of the boundaries of the hole. The cutting tools 24, 26 are mounted on a plate 23 by heat shrink fitted or square tapered shanks, the plate being attached via spring means 34, 35 to the hammer housing 12. An anvil 36 having a connection 41 and bores for compressed air for cleaning the hole, is secured to the plate. As shown, the tool formation is as wide as the hole but is not as broad, the head and housing being moved horizontally over the work by rams 19, 21 and guided by slide means 15, 15a, 16. The hammer (not shown) is raised by rams 42, 43 engaging a bar 48 guided in slideways 54, 55. The bar engages a roller 51 linked to the hammer, the rams being exhausted at the top of their stroke to permit the hammer to fall. The lost motion connection between the bar 48 and hammer permits free rebound. The rams may be pneumatically or hydraulically operated. An apertured plate 60 and attached columns support the housing from the work surface. The aperture in the plate limits the work area and depth. In lieu of rams, manual traversing means may be used (not shown).
