1355017 Winding and unwinding yarns M MARTINEZ DEVELOPMENTS Ltd 20 March 1973 [24 April 1972] 18920/72 Headings D1D and D1J This invention relates to means for maintaining constant tension in material being unwound from, or wound onto, a bobbin, reel or spool. A sensing device that senses change in effective diameter of the amount of material on the bobbin, reel or spool is used to move a spring force along a pivoted lever in a manner altering the force that the lever exerts on friction means used to brake or drive the bobbin, reel or spool; the sensing device being maintained in contact with the material by a force which is independent of the frictional force. In Fig. 1 the supply reel 10 is braked by a brake shoe 14 that is pivoted at 18. The brake shoe 14 is integral with the curved arm 19. Rigid with a shaft 24 is an arm 22 carrying a roller 21 that presses against the yarn of the package. Also rigid with the shaft 24 is a lever arm 25 carrying a link 26 at its upper end. Link 26 carries a roller 27 that runs down the curved arm 19. Roller 19 is biassed against the curved arm 19 by a spring 28, the effective pressure of which is set by screw means 30 carried by the arm 25. Spring 32 biasses the roller 21 against the yarn package. In operation, as the diameter of the package decreases the arm 22 swings anti-clockwise and this causes the lever arm 25 to swing anticlockwise also. As a result the roller 27 moves down the curved arm 19 and the effective pressure of the brake shoe 14 gradually decreases. In Fig. 3 a take-up spool 11 is driven through a slipping clutch 37 by a pulley 36. As the diameter of the yarn package increases, a roller 45 pressing against the package is displaced to rock arm 46 anti-clockwise. As a result, the roller 48 moves up the curved arm 41 and the pressure created by the spring 49 becomes more effective in causing the upper end of the curved arm 41 to thrust the pulley 36 against the friction pad of the slipping clutch. The drive to the spool 11 then increase as the package grows to give constant tension.
