In a method of applying an elongate flexible member (hereafter referred to as the " tape ") to a core in a board reel-up machine in order to sever the web and wind it into the core, one end of the tape is attached loosely to one end of the core beyond one edge of the web and is led from that end of the core across the path of the web, which is fed to a nip between a rotating drive roller and the core to overlie that face of the web opposite to that which is in contact with the core such that the tape in crossing the web is clear of the nip, the tape being led beyond the other edge of the web through a guide and being wound on to a rotatable wheel beyond the guide, the tape being pulled to cause it to pass into the nip between the core and the drive roller, the rotation of which rotate the wheel around which the other end of the tape passes, the wheel then being braked to exert a predetermined resistance to its rotation, whereby the board web is torn by the tape and is wound on to the core. The arrangement is preferably as shown in Fig. 1. The web 9 passes into the nip between core 3 and drive roller 1 (and as shown it is passing on to nearly full roller 2). A rayon tape 5 passes from the axle of the core 7, via spring clip 8, underneath the web 9, between the spaced eyelets 10 and 11, diametrically aligned with wheel 12, and finally on to wheel 12 which wheel is provided with a square cut gear 13. A pawl check nose 15 engages the teeth of this gear, lever 22 being used to disengage the check nose. In operation, when it is desired to sever the web from roll 2 and continue winding on roll 3, the tape 5 is pulled sharply between the eyelets 10 and 11. This jerk releases the tape from its spring clip 8 and the loop 6 enters the nip. The pull caused by rotation of core 3 is transmitted to the pawl check mechanism which is set to exert a braking effect (via check 15) such that the web is severed by the tape which is then pulled free of the pulley 12 and is wound on to the core holding the card in position on this core.
