Abstract

1354374 Electro-plating BURROUGHS CORP 30 April 1971 [4 May 1970] 12375/71 Addition to 1237143 Heading C7B Uniform metallic films are simultaneously electro-plated on opposing substantially flat parallel platable surfaces, the plating currents to the opposed surfaces being regulated independently of each other. Fig. 4 shows plating of disc members 228, 230 mounted on each side of a conductive holder 220. The holder and discs comprise the cathode. Anodes 218, 222 and the cathode extend wholly across a container having a non-conductive interior surface. The plating currents from the anodes (A), Fig. 6, (not shown) to the cathode (C) are provided by controllable rectifier circuits (290, 292). The rectifier circuits can be adjusted to provide the same or different amounts of current through the anodes and these currents can be controlled to be constant by circuits (294, 296). Instead of mounting discs on opposite sides of a holder, a disc to be plated on both sides may be mounted in an opening in a holder. Fig. 1 shows a holder 247 comprising an outer rectangular portion 252 with a disc member 248 to be plated mounted in an opening therein by means of an adapter. The disc has a central opening closed by a plug 274. As shown in Fig. 3, the disc 248 is thinner than the outer portion of the holder 252 and the adapter comprises inner and outer portions 256, 266 with an inclined surface therebetween. Clamping rings 258, 260 and 274, 276 secure the disc to the adapter and the adapter to the outer portion 272. Any decrease in thickness of plating caused by the presence of the rings 260, 258 can be compensated for by putting a small ring of epoxy material at their inner edges. The holder may be large enough to have two or more openings with discs mounted therein. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1189074.
