1354328 Continuous casting JONES & LAUGHLIN STEEL CORP 4 June 1971 [30 June 1970] 19115/71 Heading B3F Molten metal is poured into a chamber formed in a downward loop 15 of a moving endless metal belt 10 and between two end pieces 68, 73, to cast a strip 22 which is continuously withdrawn, e.g. by pinch rolls (49, 50), through an upper opening of the chamber, as it solidifies against the belt 10 which is cooled by fluid (from sprays 59). The upper opening is formed by two upper rolls 11, 12 (of a number of rolls guiding the belt) from which the loop 15 depends. The plane of the axes of the rolls 11, 12 may be above the axis of curvature of the loop 15, Figs. 1, 4 (not shown). It may be inclined, Fig. 2 (not shown). The cast strip in Fig. 1 (not shown) turns back over the chamber and the melt inlet to it. The strip may however be bent over a fulcrum roll (81), Fig. 4 (not shown). It is sheared or rolled. Instead of stationary segmental end pieces 68, 73 (made of refractory material or the same metal as that cast and backed by rings 69, 70 rotated by the belt 10) there may be rotated discs comprising metal shells with refractory lining (57). Each disc (33, 34) may be supported by a rotatable shaft (37) and heated. Alternatively, one disc (65) may have a central aperture (66) for the introduction of a melt inlet launder or pipe (67) and be heated by a burner (84), protruding through a similar aperture in the other disc, to conserve the melt bath heat. The belt (10) in this case is driven by one or more rolls which support the apertured discs (65) and have grooves (77) which engage disc flanges (78) (confining the belt) or by at least one roll which merely guides the belt. In the embodiment shown, the belt 10 is driven by one or both supporting rolls 11, 12. The loop 15 may be supported from beneath by auxiliary rolls. There is a movable roll (31) for maintaining belt tension and another (30) for moving the belt transversely to establish its track.
