Abstract
1354219 Stripping cigarettes ROTHMANS OF PALL MALL CANADA Ltd 11 Oct 1972 [25 Jan 1972] 46747/72 Heading A2C Tobacco is removed from the tubular openended wrapper of a cigarette by momentarily subjecting the tobacco-containing section of the cigarette to a radially compressive force and then, while maintaining the wrapper against lengthwise movement, and before the compressed tobacco within the wrapper has had time to recover its original volume, displacing the tobacco from the wrapper by directing an inert gas under pressure towards an end of the wrapper. In an embodiment for use with filter cigarettes, the cigarettes are radially compressed by a star wheel 42 while being fed in the flutes 16 of a wheel 12 which cooperates with a second wheel 14. Flutes (22) in the wheel 14 are formed in two parts of which part 26, corresponding to the filter section of the cigarette, is of lesser diameter than part 28 so that, at the point of nearest approach (30) of the wheels 12, 14, the filter part of the cigarette is firmly gripped between the flute 16 and the flute part 26. At this point (30), compressed air is directed by a pipe 38 towards the filter end of the cigarette so as to blow the tobacco out of the other end. Means are provided for collecting the displaced tobacco and the empty cigarette shells.
