1353968 Photographic materials AGFAGEVAERT AG 16 Nov 1971 [24 Nov 1970] 53112/71 Heading G2C [Also in Division C4] A photographic material comprises at least one direct-positive silver halide emulsion containing a sensitizing polymethine dye having at least one 2, 3-dihydro-pyrimidin-2-one or 2-thione ring which is quaternized in the 1-posltion and is connected through a methine chain to a nitrogencontaining 5 or 6-membered heterocyclic ring or an optionally substituted phenyl group. Preferred dyes are mainly of formula:- (in which D is a group of one of the formulµ: - E is H, aliphatic hydrocarbon, aryl or a radical of formula D; R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>4</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> are each cycloalkyl or optionally substituted aliphatic hydrocarbon or aryl; R<SP>2</SP> is aliphatic hydrocarbon or aryl; R<SP>3</SP>, R<SP>9</SP>, R<SP>10</SP> and R<SP>11</SP> are each H, aliphatic hydrocarbon or aryl; R<SP>5</SP> is phenyl which is optionally substituted by alkyl, aryl, alkoxy or halogen; R<SP>7</SP> is H, -OR<SP>9</SP>, -NR<SP>10</SP>R<SP>11</SP> or -SR<SP>9</SP>; R<SP>8</SP> is -OR<SP>9</SP> or -SR<SP>9</SP>; Z completes and optionally substituted benzene ring; Y is O or S; n is O or 1; m is O or 1; q is 1 or 2; Q completes a heterocyclic ring system containing a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic ring; the Anion may be absent; the aryl groups may be substituted).
