Abstract

1353825 Applying container closures CROWN CORK & SEAL CO Inc 12 May 1971 [28 May 1970] 14436/71 Heading B8T Interchangeable heads 56, 58 for applying crown or roll-on screw caps respectively are mounted on a turret 48 and vertically reciprocated through cam and roller mechanism 88, 86. The heads 56, 58 each have lugs 66 which slide in guideways formed between bearing members 60 and removable cover plates 64. In applying roll-on screw caps by means of spinners 124, a spindle gear 98 on each head 58 causes the lower portion of the head to rotate about its own axis, the gear 98 being driven, as the turret 48 rotates anti-clockwise, through gears 112, 108 and 102 which form a planetary system. The heads 58 have spring-loaded plungers 120 retractable within pressure pads 118. The heads 56 which apply crown caps do not engage the gear 112 and are therefore not rotated about their own axes. Empty bottles are supplied by a worm (30), Fig. 1 (not shown), and rotary spider (34) to a rotary filler 38 and thence by a spider (44) to the turret 48.
