Abstract

1353635 Pharmaceutical compositions E R SQUIBB & SONS Inc 19 April 1971 [10 March 1970] 23097/71 Heading A5B [Also in Division C3] A composition useful as a demulcent or as a pharmaceutical carrier consists substantially of from 5% to 30% by weight of a hydrocolloid selected from cellulose derivatives, vegetable gums and animal proteins and 0.1 to 10% of an emulsifying agent, the balance being a mobile non-aqueous liquid selected from mineral oils, volatile hydrocarbons which are liquid at room temperature, fatty acid esters of polyhydric alcohols and C 3-10 fatty alcohols, in which the hydrocolloid is suspended, with or without the inclusion of flavouring and/or colouring agents. The hydrocolloid may be a cellulose ether e.g. methyl cellulose, a cellulose alkyl hydroxylate e.g. hydroxymethyl cellulose, a cellulose alkyl carboxylate e.g. carboxymethyl (or -ethyl) cellulose, an alkali metal salt of a cellulose alkyl carboxylate e.g. sodium carboxy methyl (or ethyl) cellulose, gum acacia, guar gum, gum tragacanth or gelatin. Diagnostic or therapeutic compositions comprise a diagnostic or therapeutic agent, and, as a carrier, the above composition. The diagnostic agent may be a radiopaque substance such as urografin acid (3, 5-diacetylamino-2, 4, 6-triiodobenzoic acid) or barium sulphate.
