Abstract

A method of administering veterinary medicines comprises administering a substantially water-free ointment comprising at least one medicament, at least one polyalkylene glycol or an ester or ether thereof, and at least one water-swellable substance to a mucous membrane of the oral cavity of an animal, e.g. the tongue. The polyalkylene glycol may be a polyethylene glycol having a M.W. between 200 and 20,000. The water-swellable substance may be a cellulose derivative, e.g. methyl-, ethyl- or carboxymethylcellulose, or pectin, agar, gelatin, gum tragacanth, or salts or esters of alginic acid. The ointment base may contain viscosity regulators e.g. glycerin, propylene glycol, wetting agents, and preservatives e.g. methyl p-oxybenzoate, phenyl mercury nitrate, or chlorocresol. The medicament may be an antibiotic (e.g. bacitracin or neomycin sulphate), a vitamin (e.g. vitamin E), an iron preparation (e.g. ferrous fumarate), dibromoxyquinoline, succinylsulphathiazole, piperazine adipate, lignocaine, or hexylresorcinol.
