Abstract
1353620 Acrolein SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 2 July 1971 [3 July 1970 6 July 1970 8 July 1970 15 Aug 1970 11 Sept 1970] 31113/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division B1] Acrolein is produced by gas phase reaction of propylene and oxygen in the presence of a catalyst of empirical formula wherein X is one or more of manganese, magnesium and cobalt, a is 12, b is 0 to 5, c is greater than 0 but not more than 1, d is 0À1 to 5, e is 0À1 to 5, f is 0 to 12, g is 36 to 89 and h is 0À1 to 12. The oxidation is carried out at 250-500‹ C. at a pressure of 0À7 to 5 atmos, a space velocity of 200-6000 litre gas/litre catalyst/hr. a molar ratio propylene : oxygen of 1 : 0À4 to 1 : 3 and in the presence of 1 to 15 moles of steam per mole of propylene. A diluent gas may be present, e.g. nitrogen, carbon dioxide or argon. Acrylic acid is obtained as by-product.
