Abstract

1353384 Zirconia laminates UNION CARBIDE CORP 10 May 1971 [11 May 1970 (2)] 42999/73 Divided out of 1353383 Heading B5N [Also in Divisions C1 and F2] A composite structure comprising a matrix of microporous zirconia containing fibrous zirconia within it is made by impregnating the fibrous zirconia with a mixture of a liquid containing a zirconium compound and a refractory powder and heating to a temperature sufficient to convert said zirconium compound into zirconia. The impregnated fibrous material may be heated (optionally under pressure) in two stages, for drying and curing. The cured material may be reimpregnated. The refractory may be hafnia, ceria, thoria, zirconia, yttria, rare earth oxide or zircon but is preferably zirconia stabilized with yttria or ceria. The liquid containing the zirconium compound preferably contains also a compound whose oxide stabilizes the zirconia in tetragonal or cubic form, e.g. a compound of Y, Ca, Mg or Ce. In examples, laminates are formed from assemblies of zirconia woven cloth or bias-braid tape, and may be formed as a tube about a mandrel.
