Abstract

1353295 Pressure bandage S J SARNOFF 2 March 1972 [17 March 1971] 9846/72 Heading A5R A pressure actuatable bandage includes an inflatable bladder 42 and a resilient member 46 mounted on one face of the bladder to maintain the bladder in the form of a cylindrical sleeve, Fig. 4, a dressing 50 affixed to the inner face of the bladder, a flap 256 connected to one longitudinal side of the bandage and a drawbar 24 secured to the flap, the drawbar comprising a U-shaped body having a pair of parallel legs, a locking wedge 68 adapted to fit into the opening between the legs, and a band 22 extending from the other side of the bandage, whereby when the bandage is placed around a limb the band 22 may be passed through the opening in the drawbar so that tension may be applied to the band to tighten the dressing and then the locking wedge may be forced into the opening to lock the band in place, and means to inflate the bladder. The bladder is formed by three coextensive plies of vinyl 28, 30, and 32 heat sealed along edge 38 and edges 34, 36, and the resilient member 46 inserted between plies 32 and 30 at side 40, at which these plies are not sealed. The flap 256 is a continuation of the three vinyl plies 28, 30, 32 from the sealed edge 38 and one limb of the drawbar is inserted between plies 32 and 30 which are resealed at 254, and the remainder of the flap passes between the limbs The locking wedge, Fig. 7 (not shown) comprises an elongate member (70) pivoted at one end (74) to the drawbar and having a wedge shaped head (70) at the other end to engage between the legs 52 (53) of the drawbar and engage the flap and the band 22, Fig. 6 (not shown). The pressure regulator 92 comprises a cylinder 100 attached to a pressure bulb 90, and having an outlet 242 positioned below an annular shoulder 102. A valve 180 is biassed against the shoulder by a spring 190 which abuts the inturned end 19b of a sleeve 192 slidable within the cylinder by means of guides (202), Fig. 11 (not shown) in guide bars (172) on the inner cylinder surface. A tubular knob has a cammed surface 210 which bears against the upper ends of the guides, whereby the knob increases the pressure of the spring upon the valve 180. A tubular body 132 with an annular shoulder 138 fits into the lower end of the cylinder and communicates with the bulb and a one way valve 154 is seated on the shoulder 138 and positioned by ribs 112, 116, 118 and (114) against which its upper end abuts. The position of the sleeve 192 and thus the force applied by the spring 190 on the valve 180, which determines the pressure in the bladder, is indicated by a scale on the tip end of the cylinder 100, Fig. 12 (not shown). Reference has been directed by the comptroller to Specification 1,206,605.
