Abstract
1353119 Isomerizing terpenes ARIZONA CHEMICAL CO 6 March 1972 10345/72 Heading C5E A terpene-containing feed is isomerized at 120-200‹ C. in the presence of 0À1-10% by wt., based on the terpene, of a zeolite molecular sieve catalyst of the 13X type containing a sodium, potassium or lithium cation. Turpentine and/or α- or #-pinene can be isomerized to dipentene and terpinolene, and dipentene to terpinolene. The catalyst may be activated by treatment with 1-15 times its own volume of water, repeated up to 10 times, followed by drying at 150-600‹ C. until the catalyst moisture content is 4À3-10À5%. The isomerization may be carried out for 1-15 hours and preferably to at least 90% completion. In the examples, camphene and other terpenes are byproducts of the reactions.
