Abstract
1353060 Making wire ropes AMERICAN CHAIN & CABLE CO Inc 19 April 1971 [27 March 1970] 26284/71 Heading D1T A wire strand, Fig. 5, comprises a plurality of strips of flat wire 2' wrapped helically in side-by-side relationship about a core member 1, each wire having a permanent preformed helical twist about its longitudinal axis such that each strip of flat wire is able to be wrapped about the core 1 free of residual stress, the wires 2' being then radially compressed into place. Each flat wire strip 2' may be of steel; or of copper with a reinforcing core 2a of a high yield strength material. There may be an outer wrapping 40 of spaced turns of flat wire. Fig. 1 shows the core 1 passing through a rotating circular support 7 carrying forming members 8 around its periphery. The flat strips 2 pass one through each forming member 8 and in doing so are deformed to produce the aforesaid helical twist. The core 1 and helical strips 2 pass to a wrapping station B where pairs of grooved pressure rolls compress the strips 2 onto the core 1. The resulting wire strand structure 6 is drawn off by a pair of endless belts 4 and 5.
