Abstract
1352998 Temperature detecting systems GRAVINER (COLNBROOK) Ltd 16 Sept 1971 [16 Sept 1970] 44206/70 Heading G4N [Also in Division G1] Apparatus responsive to the value of a non- electric variable comprises two controllableimpedance devices (such as transistors 18, 20) connected in a series circuit with an impedance 16 responsive to a non-electric variable and arranged so that at one value of the non- electric variable, device 18 will have a high impedance relative to device 20 whereas at another value of the non-electric variable, the relative impedances will be transposed. As described, impedance 16 may be responsive to light, radiation, strain, humidity or temperature. If impedance 16 is a negative temperature coefficient thermistor and resistor 22 has a fixed value, the values of resistors 6, 8, 10 may be selected such that at low temperatures (when thermistor 16 has a high value), transistor 20 has low impedance and transistor 18 high impedance. At high temperatures, the relative impedance of the transistors 18, 20 becomes transposed. Alternatively, resistor 22 may be replaced by a negative temperature-coefficient thermistor having thermal insulation so that the apparatus only responds to rapid changes in temperature. The change in output voltage Vo due to the change in relative impedance of transistors 18, 20 may be monitored by an insulated-gate field effect transistor or gas-filled trigger tube. Alternatively, a fixed upper temperature limit can be detected by connecting a positive temperature-coefficient thermistor in series with resistor 6. In a further modification, thermistor 16 may be replaced by a fixed resistor and resistor 22 by a positive temperaturecoefficient thermistor.
