1352984 Making bonded filament sheets by winding INSTITUT KHIMICHESKOI FIZIKI AKADEMII NAUK SSSR VSESOJUZNY GOSUDARSTVENNY PROEKTNO - KONSTRUKTORSKY INSTITUT and LENINGRADSKY ZAVOD SLOISTYKH PLASTIKOV 27 July 1972 35124/72 Heading D1R In the preparation of glass filament-resin sheets in which molten glass is drawn into filaments which are then treated with binder and wound onto a rotating drum to produce a uniform layer that can be dried and then slit longitudinally to yield a sheet, a second rotating drum is arranged so that it can receive the filaments immediately the winding on the first drum is completed, and vice versa, so that there is no halt in the production and drawing of the filaments. In one embodiment the drums 3, 4 are coaxially mounted on shaft 16 with freely rotatable roller 5 disposed between them. The filaments are produced by furnace 1 which reciprocates along tracks (11, Fig. 5, not shown), and sprayed with binder at (14). When the winding on say drum 3 has been completed roller 5 is urged into frictional contact with drum 3 by pneumatic cylinders 18 and the filaments are wound onto roller 5 by the continued displacement of furnace 1. Roller 5 is urged into contact with drum 4 which is rotating at a different speed to drum 3 and hence the filaments are broken in the gap between 3 and 5. Continued displacement of furnace 1 results in the filaments being wound on drum 4. As an alternative to drum 5 the filaments may be transferred by means of a pivoted arm (6, Fig. 2, not shown) which terminates in a fork. A casing 21 permits the application of hot air during winding for drying purposes and cold air. subsequently for cooling, and can be swung back to allow removal of completed sheets. A locating device (20) stops the drum in the position for mat removal. The sheet is cut by disc blade (27) which travels along a longitudinal groove (23) in the drum. Two plates 26 are then inserted into groove (23) and secured by clamps 24 to previously inserted plates 25 in order to facilitate the removal of the sheet. In a second embodiment the two drums are mounted with their axes parallel but non-coaxial and a movable roller (7, Fig. 3, not shown) is used to transfer the stream of filaments onto the second drum. In a third embodiment two drums are mounted in a frame with their axes parallel to and equidistant from a pivot about which the frame is rotated through 180‹ in order to transfer the filament stream to another drum.
