Abstract
1352951 Glass-fibre resin laminates SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 8 Dec 1971 57002/71 Heading B5N [Also in Division B2] A method of making a laminate comprises curing under heat and pressure a plurality of layers of glass-fibre material, e.g. glass-fibre cloth, each made by electrostatically coating the material with a thermofusable, particulate resin, and heating to fuse the resin, the glass-fibre material having a resistivity of less than 1000 T# during the coating. The particle size is preferably less than 150Ám and are made of thermoplastic resin such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamides, polyethylene terephthalate, polycarbonate or polyphenylene oxide, or preferably thermosetting resin such as formaldehyde with urea or phenol, epoxy resins, acrylic resins or unsaturated polyester resins. Additives such as fillers, e.g. cellulose and curing or thixotropic agents may be mixed with the resin before or after powdering. The glassfibre cloth may be primed, before it is coated, with Werner complex compounds or silanes substituted with alkoxy, methacrylate, vinyl, aminoalkyl or epoxy groups. The primer is chosen for the surface resistivity it possesses at a given relative humidity.
