Abstract
1352780 Ligature apparatus UNITED STATES SURGICAL CORP 11 Aug 1971 [18 Aug 1970] 37648/71 Heading A5R A cartridge and anvil assembly 10, Fig. 1, for the placement of a pair of wire ligatures around a tubular organ 76, comprises a pair of parallel rails 14, each having an upstanding anvil surface 86, Fig. 10, and each provided with a guide track 82, Fig. 7, extending along the length of the rails for the guiding and bending of a ligature, a carriage 12 movable along the rails 14 and being provided with guide tracks 84 associated with guide tracks 82, a pair of wire ligatures 68 carried by the carriage, and a pusher element 16 movable relative to the carriage to push a wire ligature along the guide tracks. The cartridge and anvil assembly is adapted to be mounted on a surgical instrument 18, whereupon after initial action, shafts 28, 30 and shoulders 34, 36 move away from the nose 32 of the instrument. The carriage movesuntil the mating faces of the carriage and rails 14 come into contact with one another. However; shaft 28 continues to move in the direction 78 with respect to shaft 30, as do the shoulders 34 with respect to shoulders 36. The pair of pusher elements 16 then move in the direction (80), Fig. 8 (not shown), with the carriage 12 remaining stationary. A pair of ligatures 68 are carried by the pusher elements along their respective tracks 82, 84. Further movement in direction (80) merely diminishes the area in which the tubular structure is housed until the arms of the ligatures ride along the curved surfaces of the anvils 86. A V-shape is provided on one end of the ligature with a mating point on the other end to ensure proper mating of the ligature arms. After the ligating operation the organic structure may be severed intermediate the two ligature positions using a knife 88 which is associated with an externally positioned thumb-operated control bar 90.
